HANDMADE SCARVES

"The primary focus of my work has been felted hats and scarves that incorporate many different fibers, beads and fabric"

After working with fiber most of their lives, sisters Drin Welker and Carol Culp discovered an affinity for felt after taking a felting class in the ‘80s. They began with felting hats and soon branched out to scarves, baby shoes, sculptured animals, purses, garments and accessories.

The sisters founded a felt clothing company, Hat in Hand in 1996. Their hat designs are both attractive and functional. The felting process makes them warm, as well as waterproof, and they can be packed in a suitcase, a pocket or backpack and they pop right back into shape, ready to wear.

The sisters have have traveled the world vicariously via the hats on their customers’ heads! Knitted garments are also included in their inventory. Handspun llama fiber from Carol’s own llamas is occasionally incorporated into garments and felted work. The sisters teach a number of felting workshops annually at Welker’s studio in Sacramento and Culp’s studio in Occidental and have work consigned to the Artisans’ Co-op in Bodega, CA and Hand Goods in Occidental, CA.
