PAPER BOXES AND JOURNALS

Mary Ely has always been attracted to three dimensional art. For many years she was a dancer/choreographer, moving herself and other dancers together and separately through space, sometimes connecting, sometimes not.

As injuries started to slow her down, she began to look for another art form that would tap into her passions in the same way dance had. She tried drawing, painting, and print-making before taking a workshop in box-making and book binding and discovered an art form with never ending possibilities in which she could totally immerse herself.

“A book is like a stage, and its cover is like the curtain. I can fill the “stage” of the book with words or leave completely empty so that others can fill with words. A box is also like a stage. I can decorate with papers and ribbons or images or abstract forms, leaving the inside empty for someone else to fill
