Grapes on glass dish

I became a serious fused glass artist about 6 years ago. Prior to that, I was a businesswoman for 35 + years, but always involved in art in some way. I have a BS degree in Adult Education, an AS degree in Graphic Art and a certificate in Ceramics. I have studied fused glass for 9 years.

My passion for this medium has continued to grow. I love being able to create a piece of art glass from special formulated cut and layered glass which fuses together when fired in a kiln. What has intrigued me even more is Roses on glass platethat additional glass can be added to the initial fused piece and fired at a lower temperature to create some dimension to the glass because the second layer doesn’t melt down all the way. If all goes well, the last firing is in a mold, usually ceramic, which gives the glass a final shape. Each firing is about 16-20 hrs, depending on size of piece.

The spectrum of fused glass colors is wonderful with transparent, opalescent, textured and iridescent (sparkles) glass to work with. I love to design a mosaic or abstract using both textured and smooth glasses as well as layering glass to create dimension/depth.

I have been experimenting in two areas:

  1. adding layers of glass to both sides of a piece and
  2. adding multiple layers with varying degrees of melting. I specialize in dimensional flowers, abstracts and small hearts. I also use a ¼” edging technique on many of my pieces.
