Kelly Horan
Gourd Artist

I've had a desire to be creative for as long as I can remember. I followed that desire and received my BA in Fine Art from University California Santa Cruz and shortly after I discovered gourds. Gourds have been one of my creative outlets for the past 12 years.

Gourds are an amazing canvas. They are much more exciting than a flat white surface! When I begin a piece I look at the shape and coloration of the gourd. The curves and imperfections dictate the mood and assist me in developing character.

My current process includes cleaning, cutting, burning, painting, and applying metallic wax. In most of my pieces you'll see some amount of the natural gourd color revealed --- a reminder of where it all started.
